The Lake Superior State University Aquatic Research Laboratory (ARL) is a research facility operated by Lake Superior State University. This facility is housed in the quarter mile long Edison Sault Electric Company (longest horizontal shaft hydro plant in the world). The ARL was established in 1977 to research and monitor the water quality of the St. Mary's River and the Great Lakes in addition to preserving the sustainability of local fish populations (primarily trout, salmon, and sturgeon). The ARL is responsible for the successful introduction of Atlantic Salmon into the upper Great Lakes and serves as an extension of a number of degree programs at Lake Superior State University. For more information about the ARL and the introduction of the Atlantic Salmon into the Great Lakes, check out the following link. (http://www.lssu.edu/arl/index.php)
